Cultural pursuits
are close at hand |

West Virginia has long been known for its unsurpassed scenic
beauty, visitors who come for the natural setting and laid-back atmosphere are increasingly
finding a wealth of cultural pursuits as well at historic theaters, galleries and
arts venues statewide.
The Wheeling Symphony, Huntington Symphony and West Virginia Symphony (based in Charleston) offer both
classical and pops concerts throughout the year. The Charleston Jazz Series includes
everything from straight-ahead jazz to cutting-edge artists and the international
live music radio program "Mountain Stage," which is usually produced in Charleston,
travels to other regions of the state as well.
The Purple Fiddle in Thomas is a combination coffee house/restaurant/watering
hole and first-rate music venue that offers Mountain Music Weekends during the high
summer season and continues with consistent helpings of bluegrass, newgrass and
old-time music through the year. Union is down the road from historic Lewisburg
on U.S. 219. Its Moxie Cafe features some of the best food in the state, and there
are several concerts every year in the historic Ames Clair Hall, a lovingly maintained
1857 structure that was originally an African-American church.
Another can't-miss is a walk through the art galleries in
downtown Charleston, capped with live music and drinks at a number of charming coffeehouses
and nightclubs. Or catch a play, a national art show or have a family fun day at
the
Clay Center, the jewel in Charleston's arts crown.
